  • What could you do to improve your garden area?
  • What vegetables or herbs will be planted in your garden area? Why?

  • What equipment would you include? For example, plant pots.
  • What decorations would be in your garden to attract insects and bugs?
  • Label the materials you would use if you were to make this garden.

• Take a picture with a family member you are inspired by. Write about why they are inspirational to you.  

Healthy living:

Try a Joe Wicks work out this week. Can you create your own home workout and write it down for the class to do when we are back at school?

Time capsule:

Create a time capsule for the future to remember what it was like during this time. Use the attached time capsule sheets to support.

 

Your child should have taken home an exercise book in which to complete his or her work. If your child has not received this, then please contact the school to arrange a means of collecting it.

At the bottom of this page, you will find a 'Home Learning' pack containing a large number of reading, writing and maths activities, as well as a 'Practical Learning' pack with additional ideas of ways in which the children can learn. Please encourage your child to engage in these tasks for a focused period every day. 

Key Information

In Year 1, the children transition from the Early Years Curriculum to the National Curriculum. Our curriculum is specifically designed to include as many opportunities as possible for the children to learn by exploring, making the most of play-based learning opportunities as they gradually transition to a greater focus on whole class learning.

Our topics for the year are Castles, Seaside and Explorers and we support these themes with exciting trips, including visits to the seaside and to the Tower of London. In Science, pupils learn about the seasons, plants, humans and animals – with a focus on developing the vocabulary used to describe these different aspects of the natural world.

We encourage the children to investigate each Maths problem using a range of practical apparatus and hands-on activities. In English, we cover traditional tales such as The Princess and the Pea; contemporary fiction, including ‘Beegu’ and ‘Katie Morag’ and non-fiction topics such as Francis Drake and The Seaside. Pupils also consolidate their reading skills with the SoundsWrite phonics programme, which helps them to become fluent readers.

Home Learning

The children have reading books which they should be reading with their adult daily. These books will be changed every Wednesday (unless your child is absent or forgets to bring their books in).

Make some "sea biscuits" for Mrs Grinling to send to Mr Grinling. Take pictures with your creations and write sentences about what you did. 

  • 200g unsalted butter, softened
  • 200g golden caster sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 400g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

Method

  1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. Put the butter in a bowl and beat it until soft and creamy. Beat in the sugar, then the egg and vanilla, and finally the flour to make a dough. If the dough feels a bit sticky, add a little bit more flour and knead it in.

  2. Pull pieces off the dough and roll them out to about the thickness of two £1 coins on a floured surface. The easiest way to do this with small children is to roll the mixture out on a baking mat. Cut out shapes using a 9cm biscuit cutter, or a use the rim of a small glass and peel away the leftover dough around the edges. Press some clean toys gently into the biscuits, making sure you make enough of a mark without going all the way through. Re-roll off-cuts and repeat.

  3. Transfer the whole mat or the individual biscuits to the baking sheet and bake for 8-10 mins or until the edges are just brown. Leave to cool for 5 mins, then serve. Will keep for three days in a biscuit tin.
