Key Information

In Year 1, the children transition from the Early Years Curriculum to the National Curriculum. Our curriculum is specifically designed to include as many opportunities as possible for the children to learn by exploring, making the most of play-based learning opportunities as they gradually transition to a greater focus on whole class learning.

Our topics for the year are Castles, Seaside and Explorers and we support these themes with exciting trips, including visits to the seaside and to the Tower of London. In Science, pupils learn about the seasons, plants, humans and animals – with a focus on developing the vocabulary used to describe these different aspects of the natural world.

We encourage the children to investigate each Maths problem using a range of practical apparatus and hands-on activities. In English, we cover traditional tales such as The Princess and the Pea; contemporary fiction, including ‘Beegu’ and ‘Katie Morag’ and non-fiction topics such as Francis Drake and The Seaside. Pupils also consolidate their reading skills with the SoundsWrite phonics programme, which helps them to become fluent readers.

The children have reading books which they should be reading with their adult daily. These books will be changed every Wednesday (unless your child is absent or forgets to bring their books in).

The children are given spellings every Monday and will be tested on these every Friday.

The best loved bear by Diana Noonan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQgar3M_NCA

Tim was really happy that his bear had won a medal. Use your imagination and think about how your bear could win a medal.

Can you write a story about your bear and how it won a medal? Write your story over two days. Think about a beginning, middle and end. Where was the bear? How did the bear win the medal? How did the bear feel at the end?

Please email writing to your teacher for feedback. This can be done by taking a photo on your phone of the work and emailing it over.

Draw a picture of your favourite bear.

Maybe you could choose the one you brought to the Teddy Bear Hospital in school.

Can you describe him? What does your bear look like? Why is he/she your favourite bear?

Write three sentences describing your bear.

Make sure you use capital letters for the start of your sentences and the name of your bear. Can you use the word ‘because’ in your sentence when saying why he is your favourite bear?

The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rue8DclJNuY

Make some "sea biscuits" for Mrs Grinling to send to Mr Grinling. Take pictures with your creations and write sentences about what you did.

  • 200g unsalted butter, softened
  • 200g golden caster sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 400g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

Method

  1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. Put the butter in a bowl and beat it until soft and creamy. Beat in the sugar, then the egg and vanilla, and finally the flour to make a dough. If the dough feels a bit sticky, add a little bit more flour and knead it in.

  2. Pull pieces off the dough and roll them out to about the thickness of two £1 coins on a floured surface. The easiest way to do this with small children is to roll the mixture out on a baking mat. Cut out shapes using a 9cm biscuit cutter, or a use the rim of a small glass and peel away the leftover dough around the edges. Press some clean toys gently into the biscuits, making sure you make enough of a mark without going all the way through. Re-roll off-cuts and repeat.

  3. Transfer the whole mat or the individual biscuits to the baking sheet and bake for 8-10 mins or until the edges are just brown. Leave to cool for 5 mins, then serve. Will keep for three days in a biscuit tin.
